There are certain months when I know almost immediately where I want our Story Post donation to go.
August was one of those months.
As wildfires spread through the Spokane, Washington area, they destroyed natural habitats, homes and neighborhoods and forced families to evacuate, often with very little notice. And as happens during so many disasters, local animal organizations suddenly found themselves caring for animals and families who needed help right now.
That is exactly the kind of moment I hoped The Story Post could help with.
Because of everyone who has joined The Story Post, we donated $297 to SpokAnimal C.A.R.E. in Spokane, Washington, to help with their wildfire response.
I also covered the processing and software fees, bringing the total payment to $315.76.
And that brings our Story Post animal rescue donations to $871 so far.
Why I Chose SpokAnimal
SpokAnimal has been responding directly to the needs created by the Spokane-area wildfires.
They are providing free temporary boarding for pets whose families have been displaced, helping with lost and found animals, distributing pet food and supplies, and helping coordinate care for animals who need emergency medical treatment. More than 100 displaced pets have already received temporary care through their wildfire response efforts.
When I saw what was happening, this felt like one of those times when the need was immediate.
Food is needed now.
Supplies are needed now.
Animals need somewhere safe to go now.
Families who have already lost so much need to know that their animals are being cared for while they figure out what comes next.
This is one of the things I love most about being able to make these donations each month. We can choose organizations doing wonderful ongoing rescue work, but we can also respond when something unexpected happens and an organization suddenly needs additional help.

This donation came from all of you who have joined The Story Post.
Every month when I sit down to make our animal rescue donation, I am very aware that I'm able to do it because this little community continues to grow.
Since we began in April, $871 has now gone directly to animal rescue.
That is $871 helping with food, shelter, veterinary care, rescue work and, this month, an emergency response for animals caught in the middle of a natural disaster.
And I really want you to know that you did that.

A Little Mailbox Joy That Does Some Good
If you've been thinking about joining The Story Post, I think this is one of the things that makes it especially meaningful.
There's something lovely about opening your mailbox and seeing an envelope waiting there with your name on it—something that isn't a bill, an advertisement or another thing asking something from you.
It's simply a little moment to look forward to.
But I love knowing that the good doesn't stop at your mailbox.
